A superb book. While “normal ” people go about their lives, the ER doctor lives a strange and sometimes bizarre drama that grinds on endlessly, day after day, an experience made up of grief, fear, hope, life, death, the uncanny, base and sublime human motives of all sorts and, just possibly, enlightenment. This is a world difficult to depict, but the title of Frank Huyler’s memoir, “White Hot Light” is an exquisite metaphor for the intensity and starkness and insight of this “report from the front.” Gorgeously written, profoundly felt, deeply revealing, and strangely uplifting. The best book on any subject that I have read in years.
